Villages are assessed in nine key areas, including cultural and natural resources, economic and social sustainability, environmental sustainability, and governance. The initiative consists of three pillars:
Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO: This category recognizes villages with accredited cultural and natural assets, a commitment to preserving community-based values, and a clear commitment to innovation and sustainability across various dimensions.
Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO Upgrade Programme: Villages that show potential but need support in specific areas are identified in this category and provided with guidance to meet the recognition criteria.
The Best Tourism Villages Network: This network facilitates the exchange of experiences, best practices, and learning among its members and is open to contributions from experts and partners engaged in rural development through tourism.
With the inclusion of 74 new villages this year, the network now comprises 190 villages working together to promote responsible tourism.
