UNWTO Names Its Best Tourism Villages for 2023

In a world where responsible tourism is becoming paramount, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has taken a significant step by recognizing villages that are at the forefront of preserving cultural diversity, local values, and natural landscapes. The recently announced Best Tourism Villages 2023 list comprises 54 exceptional villages from diverse corners of the globe. These villages, chosen from nearly 260 applicants, represent the epitome of sustainable development, cultural preservation, and innovation in the realm of rural tourism.

In this blog, we will delve into the significance of this initiative and explore a few remarkable villages that have made it to the prestigious list.

The UNWTO’s Best Tourism Villages Initiative

The UNWTO’s Best Tourism Villages initiative, launched in 2021, is a part of the Tourism for Rural Development Programme. It aims to promote sustainable development, combat depopulation, encourage innovation, and create value chains in rural areas through tourism. Villages are assessed in nine key areas, including cultural and natural resources, economic and social sustainability, environmental sustainability, and governance. The initiative consists of three pillars:

Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO: This category recognizes villages with accredited cultural and natural assets, a commitment to preserving community-based values, and a clear commitment to innovation and sustainability across various dimensions.

Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO Upgrade Programme: Villages that show potential but need support in specific areas are identified in this category and provided with guidance to meet the recognition criteria.

The Best Tourism Villages Network: This network facilitates the exchange of experiences, best practices, and learning among its members and is open to contributions from experts and partners engaged in rural development through tourism.

With the inclusion of 74 new villages this year, the network now comprises 190 villages working together to promote responsible tourism.

This celebration not only showcases the region’s traditional arts, crafts, and music but also empowers local artisans and preserves community-based values. Through initiatives like these, Dhordo becomes a shining example of how tourism can breathe life into a community while safeguarding its heritage.

It encourages travelers to seek authentic experiences and fosters a harmonious relationship between tourists and the communities they visit. As these villages become part of the Best Tourism Villages Network, they collaborate and share experiences, creating a unique global rural network dedicated to promoting responsible and sustainable tourism.
