Travelling to Bhutan from India in 2026? There is one mandatory fee every Indian traveller must know about. It is called the Sustainable Development Fee, or SDF. Here is everything broken down simply.
What Is the Bhutan SDF?
The SDF is a daily fee paid by tourists directly to the Government of Bhutan. It is not optional. Every visitor pays it, regardless of how they enter the country.
Here Is What the SDF Funds
- Free healthcare for Bhutanese citizens
- Free education across the country
- Environmental conservation and carbon neutrality
- Cultural heritage preservation
- Tourism infrastructure development
How Much Do Indians Pay in 2026?
The Sustainable Development Fee for Indian nationals is Rs 1,200 per person per night as of 2026. This is confirmed by the Embassy of India, Thimphu.
Age-Wise SDF Rates for Indians
- Adults (13 years and above): INR 1,200 per night
- Children aged 6 to 12: INR 600 per night (50% discount)
- Children aged 5 and below: Free (fully exempt)
This rate is fixed until 31 August 2027.

Do Indians Pay Less Than Other Tourists?
Yes. Significantly less.
Most other nationalities pay USD 100 per person per night, fixed until 31 August 2027. At current exchange rates, that is over INR 8,300 per night. Indian travellers pay INR 1,200. That is roughly 85% less.
What Is New in 2026: GST on Tourism Services
From 1 January 2026, Bhutan introduced a Goods and Services Tax at a rate of 5 percent. This applies to tourism services but not to the SDF itself.
What This Means for Indian Travellers
- Your SDF cost stays the same at INR 1,200 per night
- Hotel stays, meals, and ground transport now attract 5% GST
- Factor this additional cost into your overall trip budget
Who Is Exempt From the SDF?
Certain categories do not need to pay the SDF at all:
- Foreign workers approved by Bhutan labour and immigration
- Foreigners married to Bhutanese citizens and their children
- Foreign students enrolled in a regular study programme
